When managing properties on multiple channels, speed and data flow are essential to avoid double bookings, maximize revenue, and ensure a great guest experience.
Hostaway offers two connection methods with external channels: Direct API Connections (Native) and iCal (Calendar Links). Below, we explain how each works and why Hostaway’s technology makes the difference.
1. Direct API Connections: Advanced Real-Time Syncing
API or XML connection is the gold standard in vacation rental management. Hostaway has direct native integrations with the major Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) in the market.
- Instant Sync: Unlike other systems, Hostaway sends and receives updates for availability, rates, and reservations instantly or within seconds directly with the platforms.
- Full Data Depth: It doesn't just block dates. The API connection centrally syncs photos, descriptions, daily rates, minimum stays, house rules, and even direct guest messaging through the Hostaway Unified Inbox.
- Protection Against Double Bookings: By operating in real-time through a constant push & pull data flow, the risk of two guests booking the same dates on different channels is reduced to virtually zero.
Note: Certain bulk updates or complex configuration structural changes (such as channel-specific rules) may take up to 30 minutes to fully propagate depending on the channel's server internal processing.
2. iCal (Calendar Links): Backup Syncing
iCal connection is a traditional digital calendar format based on .ics files used primarily as an alternative for connecting smaller or local platforms that do not have their own API technology.
- Scheduled Sync: It works through a polling process, where one system "asks" the other if there are changes at scheduled time intervals (usually 30 minutes to several hours).
- Data Limitations: iCal only transmits availability dates (blocks and future reservations). It does not sync rates, listing content, or allow guest messaging.
- Higher Latency: Since checks are not real-time, there is a time window where double bookings could be generated if a channel hasn't been updated in time.
Comparison Table: Sync Speed by Connection Type
This table summarizes how the two connection methods behave on the Hostaway platform:
| Connection Type | Sync Method | Typical Sync Speed | Channel Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct API (Native Integration) | Real-time push/pull via OTA API | Seconds (Real-time) | Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com, Expedia, Google Vacation Rentals |
| iCal (Calendar Link) | Scheduled .ics file polling | Up to 30 minutes | Any platform without a direct API integration with Hostaway |
Hostaway's channel manager uses direct API connections for all major OTAs, providing real-time synchronization. iCal is only used as a fallback for platforms without API support.
